If you plan to scan negatives or slides, you will want to spend a little more money. Flatbed scanners with the capability to scan slides and negatives need to have an extra attachment that will hold the negatives/slides in place while they are being scanned.

In addition to having the attachment, flatbed scanners that are used to scan photos, negatives, or slides should have a higher scanning resolution for the best results. Many inexpensive scanners only scan as high as 2400 or 4800 dpi which is not very good resolution for a photo. For photos ideally you want a scanner that will scan at 9600 dpi, similar to the CanoScan 9000F or the Epson Perfection V600.

If you are looking for a scanner to keep track of receipts and documents, it is a good idea to spend a little more money and get the NeatDesk scanner. This scanner will not only scan your important documents but the included software will file them and extract vital information from receipts and documents, such as amount spent, payment method, etc.

But, there is a place for the inexpensive scanners. One of the major selling points of inexpensive flatbed scanners is there size.
