Would you like to give your old slides and negatives life again? You can easily convert these to a digital file using a slide and negative scanner. You will be able to email, print and turn those images into movies for the entire family to enjoy for many more years.

How to scan a photo negative

Using a scanner for your 35mm negatives is a wonderful opportunity in helping to restore old photos. You will be able to save these images before the negative deteriorates with age.

You have the choice of either using a specialty negative scanner or a flatbed scanner. At one point it was difficult to find an inexpensive specialty scanner, but not anymore. Both of these devices are an easy way for you to scan your images and make them digital for you to share with other people using your computer.

Select which ones you want to scan and take the negative out of the plastic or paper sleeve. Avoid touching the actual image with your fingers. Make sure the photo negative is not smudged with dirt or dust. You can clean the dust off with a clean bulb blower. These can be purchased at any camera store and is located in most cleaning kits. However, be careful about using compressed air to blow your negatives; these have been known to leave CO2 spots your negative.

There are a variety of scanners. Some will scan one at a time and others will scan all negatives in a sleeve automatically. Once scanned, you can even go as far as to digitally touch-up each photo and then make a copy for yourself.

How to scan slide photos

Slide scanners come in a variety of models as well. Some can even handle preserving negative photos. Smaller scanners are better and least expensive than the larger ones. You can scan your slide photos by using a film scanner or slide converter. The film scanner has been recommended if you want better quality photos.

After installing the scanner software, organize all of your images so you can place them in a digital photo. Each folder is like having a separate photo album. Now you are ready to scan your image. Check to see if you are scanning an image with color or black and white. You have the opportunity now to save your photo as a JPEG (this will save you some space on your computer rather than saving the photo "as is").

Slide and negative scanners come in a variety of styles and can be very inexpensive. Invest in these for your old images and you will be able to share them from generation to generation with quality.
